Kellie Pickler Prom Dress — Much Ado About Nothing?

The memories of a prom night usually stay with an individual for her life. Therefore, it’s not surprising that shopping for a prom dress and its matching accessories is one of the most sought after moments in any teenage girl’s life! What you wear and how you carry yourself is undoubtedly very important. In fact, so much of importance is assigned to this high school and college function that every thing about it becomes news. Considering this — it does not come as a big surprise that the whole nation is talking about the famous Kelly Pickler prom dress.

Kelly Pickler, the cute and adorable contestant of American Idol, was an instant hit with a majority of viewers. This small-town, vulnerable-looking girl from South Carolina became famous for her country songs and one-liners. Hailing from a broken family, her naive looks garnered enough sympathy from everybody to take her to great heights of popularity. However, the whole country got a rude shock when a particular picture of hers surfaced. Here’s the scoop —

This particular picture showed her wearing a red colored prom dress which most people found to be very offensive! This was primarily because the dress was very revealing and had a built in thong! The dress, people thought, was not in accordance to the popular innocent image which Kelly portrayed. This was found all the more offensive because Kelly hails from a small town and girls out there do not dress this way (?) for proms.

The question now arises is, how far is it justified to create such an uproar about something as personal as a girl’s prom dress? What one wears is undoubtedly one’s personal choice and decision. However, one should not forget that celebrity status demands a certain price! Kelly represents a certain segment of the population and is definitely answerable to her fans who have made her popular. Celebrities should generally take care not to hurt the sentiments of their supporters because it is the public who makes them popular.

Therefore, it did not come as a surprise that her glaring, baring prom dress attracted so much negative attention. However, it must also be realized that instead of creating an uproar one can do more subtle things like withdrawing support. The now popular Kelly Pickler prom dress was no doubt offensive, but fact remains that absolutely nobody can restrict Kelly from wearing the same again. As far as Kelly is concerned, she must be well aware of the consequences of her wearing such a dress. So, she should be best left alone as far as her personal grooming is concerned. The people on their part got to learn a lesson that looks can be deceptive.

How to Dress and Act Like a Ghetto Prep

If you don’t like ghetto, and you don’t like prep, you might like the two mixed together. Urban dictionary defines ghetto prep as a style of attire rather than attitude. It’s true that you really can’t act like a ghetto person and a prep at the same time, but you can dress like one. It almost seems conflicting as preps and ghetto people sometimes seem like complete opposites, but if you match the clothes right, you can look cool without being accused of being ghetto or prep. Mixing these two together is actually a lot easier than it might sound, you just have to know where to start. Just follow these steps and you can dress like a ghetto prep.

1. When you pick out clothes, make sure you they’re always basic colored. If your clothes are to colorful you might be mistaken for scene or emo. When buying name brands, you should definitely consider Hollister, Baby Phat, Southpole, and Ambercrombie and Fitch.

2. Girls should stick to wearing mostly skinny jeans. Guys, wear loose jeans and jean shorts that sit a little bit below your waist. If you start waddling like a penguin that’s a pretty good sign that you’re wearing them to low. Guys and girls both can wear plaid shorts, these are more preppy for guys and ghetto tom boy for girls.

3. For shoes, you should definitely invest in buying some Jordans or Nike dunks. These work whether you’re a guy or a girl.

4. Girls should wear their hair in a ponytail or have it straightened. Guys need to keep a short, clean cut. Keep your facing looking fresh by shaving off any facial hair and make sure your eyebrows aren’t bushy.

5. Guys should try to get their hands on a gold chain, or at least counterfeit gold. Girls have a lot of option when it comes to jewelry; hoop earrings, monroe piercing, and large intruding necklaces. Just try experimenting with jewelry until you have the right look, what looks good on some people doesn’t on others.

6. If you really want to look like a ghetto prep, then you need to have a ghetto prep attitude. Ghetto preps have the qualities of both preps and ghetto people. Some traits might be; nice, assertive, and just out there. You have to be a good person but be able to stick up for yourself when necessary. You have to be able to have fun all time and be fun to be around. You should also consider joining basketball, track, or football. If you join more preppy sports like golf or tennis you’re pretty much guaranteeing that your image will be ruined as a ghetto prep.

80s Fancy Dress - Robert Palmer Girls, Smokin’ Hot From the 80s Smash Hit, "Simply Irrisistable"!

You and your girlfriends could make a very sexy entrance with this look from a cool video from the 80s era. The Robert Palmer Girls were infamous thanks to two of Robert Palmer’s hit singles, “Addicted to Love” and “Simply Irresistible”. Notably, the makeup is quite stark, and it would also make an interesting costume idea for Halloween.

So the actual Palmer Girls costume itself is very easy, and you could wear it as a singular person, or as a group of girls.

All you need is:

- Slinky, black, mini dress

- Orange satin sash fitted around the waist as a belt (Or just an orange belt)

- Black stockings

- Black heals / pumps

For the hair, comb through a gel type of product, and fix in a bun, low, at the nape of the neck. Ensure you comb your fringe back into your bun.

Now, we need to work on the make up. You will need:

- Smokey coloured eye shadow - rubbed back from the eye lid out. Use on the lower lid, and leave close to the eye with the lighter colours. Otherwise, the dark shadow will make your eyes look like they’re too close together.

- Light coloured eye shadow with white tones for the eye brow ridge, and inside eye

- Smokey / Black eye liner, to be rubbed under the eye lid, and applied as a thick line on the top lid

- Eye brow pencil or tinted eye brows, groomed
